Request for Proposals Issued to Participate in caBIG Population Sciences Special Interest Group

Booz Allen Hamilton, in support of NCI’s Cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid (caBIG) Program, is requesting proposals for Special Interest Group (SIG) Participant - Population Sciences SIG. The Request for Proposals (RFP), Statement of Work, and associated forms can be downloaded. Proposals must be received no later than Thursday, June 29, 2006, and must be completed in accordance with the Proposal Instructions.

caBIG is an informatics infrastructure that will connect teams of clinical and basic cancer and biomedical researchers together to enable them to better develop and share tools and data in an open environment with common standards. caBIG Web site.

The Population Sciences SIG (PS SIG) is pleased to announce its RFP for funded participation. Population sciences are an integral component of cancer research and represent key elements in the bridge between clinical/basic research and cancer control. The PS SIG aims to advance the various disciplines of population sciences including epidemiology, surveillance, behavioral science, prevention, cancer control, biostatistics, cohort studies, and health outcomes research by creating data standards and developing tools that operate within caBIG and by leveraging existing caBIG activities and resources to address the common needs of these disciplines. The PS SIG is looking for funded participants to assume leadership roles as it is organized to tackle this wide array of problems.

For more information about the PS SIG, refer to the mission statement.

Registration Open for Career Development Workshop to Promote Diversity in Research Funding

The “2nd Biennial Career Development Workshop to Promote Diversity in Research Funding” will be held September 6-8, 2006, in Palm Desert, California. It is sponsored by the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS) and Center for Reducing Cancer Health Disparities, and the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) Office of Women’s Health. (This workshop program formerly was titled the “Minority Investigator Career Development Workshop.”)

The workshop is being held to provide training on the grants process, grant writing, and research methodology to mid-career and/or transitioning scientists from underrepresented racial and ethnic minority groups, persons with disabilities, and individuals from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds to enhance their ability to compete for NIH funding. The information will facilitate professional growth and development and increase technical skills deemed necessary for successful grant writing. The workshop is consistent with the Trans-U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) Cancer Health Disparities Progress Review Group goal to develop training programs designed to create a diverse cancer care workforce.

For additional information about the workshop and to complete the online registration form, visit the workshop Web site.

Travel support is available for a limited number of workshop participants. To be considered for this support, one must register for the workshop by Friday, June 23, 2006. The workshop organizers encourage registering as early as possible. All applicants will be notified by e-mail no later than July 7, 2006, about their status with regard to travel support.

The Meeting and Planning Committee Chair is Vickie L. Shavers, Ph.D., Epidemiologist, Applied Research Branch, DCCPS.
