In September 1997, participants in the National March—a fund-raising event arranged by the Swedish Cancer Society—were invited to fill out a 36-page questionnaire with detailed information on health-related behaviors. A total of 43,863 adults were recruited into the cohort. Using the individually unique national registration number (which provides information on date of birth and sex) has allowed essentially complete follow-up through linkage to nationwide databases that provide information on emigration, cancer incidence and dates, and causes of death.
