EGRP Announces Search for Program Directors, June 2006
The Epidemiology and Genetics Research Program (EGRP), Division of Cancer
Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS), National Cancer Institute (NCI), has
openings for two mid (2+ years) - to senior-level epidemiologists. These
are wonderful positions for the right epidemiologists. Program Directors
develop and manage research portfolios of grants in cancer epidemiology and
help set the course of the field on a national level. NCI is the primary
Federal agency responsible for cancer research and is part of the National
Institutes of Health (NIH), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).
EGRP is the largest funder of etiologic cancer epidemiology grants nationally
and worldwide. It supports university-based research in cancer epidemiology,
including grants focusing on discovery or environmental, behavioral, infectious,
medical, and social and cultural factors determinants of cancer risk, the role
of genetic and epigenetic factors in cancer etiology, and long-term risks of
cancer recurrence and second primary cancers. Housed within DCCPS, the
research supported should provide the basis for further development of interventions
to reduce cancer incidence, mortality, and suffering.
These positions
offer opportunities to develop initiatives on the cutting-edge of cancer epidemiology,
responsibility for a rich portfolio of grant-supported research in distinct
areas of cancer epidemiology, protected time to conduct research, opportunities
for transdisciplinary collaboration, and a scientifically energizing and collegial
environment. There are opportunities to present
findings at scientific meetings and to publish results in peer-review journals.
Successful candidates also will have significant collaboration and leadership
opportunities with scientists across NCI who are involved in large scientific
endeavors and initiatives in areas of relevance to cancer epidemiology such
as cancer control, cancer research consortia, health disparities research,
and bioinformatics.
Formal training in epidemiology, a doctoral degree, and
strong interest in developing and managing research initiatives for the extramural
community (predominantly university-based) that will move forward our understanding
of the etiology of cancer are required. Experience in administering
grant programs is an asset but not required. Knowledge of and interest in transdisciplinary
approaches that include epidemiologic principles is highly preferred. U.S.
citizenship is required. Interested individuals should send their curriculum
vitae to epimeeting@mail.nih.gov. The
positions are at the GS13/14 level; the pay range is $77,353 - $118,828. EGRP’s
offices are located in Rockville, MD, a suburb of Washington, DC. Further
information about EGRP is available at epi.grants.cancer.gov.
