Measures of the Food Environment

The goal of this Web site is to enable access to existing measures of the food environment and stimulate the development of the next generation of tools. Robust measures of the food environment will strengthen research on the effects of the community-level food environment on individual dietary behavior, inform policymaking, and help reduce the prevalence of obesity through targeted interventions.

This Web site provides a compilation of articles and instruments from January 1990 through 2012 that include community-level measures of the food environment. Here, we define the food environment to include food stores, restaurants, schools, and worksites. Measurement of the food environment and its effects on dietary behavior is a growing, field of inquiry.

The Measures of the Food Environment website is no longer being updated; however, the National Collaborative On Childhood Obesity Research (NCCOR), of which the National Cancer Institute (NCI) is a member, has developed the Measures Registry, and this resource is updated on a regular basis.
