Publication Acknowledgement Guidelines

The following presents general principles for GAME-ON proposal review and authorship of projects associated with GAME-ON:

  1. Provide equal opportunity for GAME-ON groups and investigators to participate in collaborative projects leading to publications.
  2. Give credit where it is due by representing all active collaborators in positions commensurate with their contributions.
  3. Provide standard acknowledgement of the GAME-ON network and GAME-ON -affiliated consortia.
  4. Define a review process that allows for "internal review" of GAME-ON projects without unduly slowing down the reporting of science.

Proposal Review

  1. Project proposals for GAME-ON must be reviewed and approved by the Working Group that is most appropriate for the project's aims. Each Working Group is responsible for its own review process. See descriptions of Working Groups and contacts
  2. Approved projects will be forwarded timely to the Steering Committee by the Working Group Chair.
    • The Steering Committee is responsible for review of Working Group-approved projects to reduce redundancy across working groups by preventing projects with similar aims or components from being implemented independently. If there is overlap between projects, the lead investigators will be asked to resolve these overlaps in a collaborative and collegial manner before approval by the Steering Committee. Steering Committee approval is the final step in the approval process and represents agreement by all the GAME-ON groups involved in the ancillary project proposal submitted.
    • Projects submitted to Working Groups will be centrally tracked by NCI.

Authorship

  1. GAME-ON should be listed in the title and the author list according to the matrix outlined in Table 1. Additional consortia that have contributed to the resources can be listed in addition to GAME-ON. When considering group authorship, the following byline examples should be considered and the most appropriate structure used.

    Byline examples:

    • The XYZ Group (the group is the only author)
    • Author1, Author2, ..., and the XYZ Group (the group is one of several authors)
    • Author1, Author2, and Author3 for the XYZ Group (the three authors are writing on behalf of the Group)
    • Author1, Author2, Author3; Author4 and Author5 for the XYZ Group; Author6, Author7... (authors 4 and 5 are writing on behalf of the group; other authors are unaffiliated with the group)
  2. Any person nominated to be an author of a GAME-ON manuscript must meet the authorship criteria of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (updated February 2006 - http://www.icmje.orgExternal Web Site Policy). These state: "Authorship credit should be based on: 1) substantial contributions to conception and design, or acquisition of data, or analysis and interpretation of data; 2) drafting the article or revising it critically for important intellectual content; and 3) final approval of the version to be published. Authors should meet conditions 1, 2, and 3. In applying these criteria, it is expected that authors meet all three conditions."
  3. Position in the list of authors will be determined preliminarily at the onset of the project proposal, and re-negotiated during the development of the manuscript as warranted by individual contributions, taking into account projected contributions to the protocol development, acquisition and preparation of data sets, data analysis, and drafting of the paper.
  4. Upon publication or presentation, copies of all manuscripts, abstracts, and posters are to be submitted to the Working Group Chair and the NCI Program Officer or designee.

Acknowledgment

All GAME-ON manuscripts should include the acknowledgements according to the matrix outlined in detail in Table 1. The following is the minimum acknowledgment recommended. Responsibility for Compliance with Guidelines

  1. The first and senior authors for each paper will be responsible for compliance with these guidelines. The ultimate responsibility lies with the first author, but responsibility lies with the senior author as well to assure that the authors comply with their responsibilities.
  2. If a dispute arises in the course of preparing a GAME-ON paper, the first or the senior author for the paper will attempt to resolve it by negotiation with all parties that it affects or may affect. Any resolution reached must be in accord with the principles and practice outlined above. If no such resolution can be found, the proposed senior author should refer the dispute to the GAME-ON Steering Committee for its consideration and advice.
  3. Manuscripts will be tracked by NCI and checked for compliance with these guidelines at the time of submission. NCI will provide and overall report on publications to the Executive Committee before the semi-annual GAME-ON meetings.
