NCI Funding Opportunities to Foster Research Independence for Early Career Investigators

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) provides funding opportunities in support of research career development in all areas of cancer research, including cancer prevention, control, behavioral sciences, population sciences, and translational research.

K awards, also known as career development awards, provide support for senior postdoctoral fellows or faculty-level candidates. The objective of these programs is to bring candidates to the point where they are able to conduct their research independently and are competitive for major grant support.

NCI Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (K01)

NCI’s Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS) is pleased to be partnering with the Center for Cancer Training to promote new K funding opportunities for early career researchers working in cancer control and population sciences. DCCPS invites applications from early career scientists conducting research in cancer control science through NOT-CA-24-022, published in the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts. Please refer to NOT-CA-24-022 for more information about the scientific areas of interest to DCCPS and how to apply for funding.

The next application due date is October 12, 2024.

For more information about the K01 mechanism, see https://www.cancer.gov/grants-training/training/funding/k01. For application acceptance in the subject area of Cancer Control and Population Sciences, applicants must include “NOT-CA-24-022” (without quotation marks) in the Agency Routing Identifier field (box 4B) of the SF424 R&R form. NCI K01 applications without this information in box 4B will not be accepted and will be withdrawn.

Worta McCaskill-Stevens Career Development Award for Community Oncology and Prevention Research (K12)

NCI is offering administrative supplements for current NCI K12 awardees to support an additional scholar who is establishing a career in improving the health outcomes of people with HIV and cancer. The purpose of this K12 award is to support the training of clinical scientists in community cancer prevention, screening, intervention, control, and treatment research. Special emphasis is placed on training clinical scientists whose career goal is to improve the care and outcomes of minority health populations and populations with health disparities that are underrepresented in clinical trials using an equity lens. Please refer to NOT-CA-24-081 for more information about these administrative supplements and details on how to apply for funding.

Applications must be submitted by October 30, 2024.

For more information, visit https://www.cancer.gov/grants-training/training/funding/k12-mccaskill-stevens.

Other K Awards Issued by NCI

NCI also offers several other K award funding opportunities for clinician-scientists and investigators with quantitative scientific and engineering backgrounds. In addition, NCI offers Pathway to Independence awards to help investigators obtain independent, tenure-track or equivalent faculty positions. Visit the Center for Cancer Training’s web page, Funding for Cancer Training, for more details about these other K award mechanisms.
