A Decade of SeqSPACE: Advancing Sequencing Technology in Cancer Epidemiology
NCI’s Epidemiology and Genomics Research Program (EGRP), part of the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS), recently celebrated an exciting milestone – the 10-year anniversary of the Sequencing Strategies for Population and Cancer Epidemiology Studies (SeqSPACE) webinar series.
The SeqSPACE webinar series began in 2014, following the “Making Sense of the Sequence” workshop. In this workshop, participants discussed several challenges in the field of genetic epidemiology related to the transition from genome-wide association studies using genotyping platforms to studies incorporating sequencing technologies. Challenges included the lack of standardized pipelines and the need for best practices for next-generation sequencing studies.
The webinar series provides an opportunity for researchers to share lessons learned and practical information regarding the application of sequencing technologies to cancer epidemiology studies. By sharing insights across projects that incorporated sequencing technologies, EGRP aimed to facilitate higher-quality research and more interpretable genetic research studies for the future and encourage the establishment of best practices for epidemiology research.
Over the past 10 years, SeqSPACE has hosted more than 50 webinars featuring more than 70 speakers. On December 3, 2024, a special webinar, “SeqSPACE 10 Year Anniversary: Past, Present, and Future,” featured speakers Kimberly F. Doheny, Ph.D; Alexander Gusev, Ph.D.; and Melissa B. Davis, Ph.D., as they reflected on learned experiences, opportunities and challenges, and their vision for the future of sequencing in cancer epidemiology as the field continues to evolve. The webinar was moderated by Fredrick Schumacher, Ph.D., M.P.H. and Tabitha Harrison, M.P.H., who are EGRP-funded researchers and have been involved with this series since its inception.
Two new SeqSPACE webinars have already been scheduled for 2025:
- May 6, 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. ET – John Witte, Ph.D., M.S., will discuss using genetics to improve biomarkers for cancer screening and applying this strategy in examining prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and prostate cancer.
- June 17, 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. ET – Zhiping Weng, Ph.D., will discuss the integrative analysis and visualization platform for cancer regulatory genomics.
The SeqSPACE webinars are open to all, but pre-registration is required. For more information about future SeqSPACE webinars or to view past recordings, visit https://epi.grants.cancer.gov/events/seqSPACE/. For questions, contact the SeqSPACE Planning Committee.
