Promoting Research Data Re-Use
Through its data sharing policies, NIH has had a long-standing commitment to making data from its funded projects available for replication and for secondary research use. Consistent with this commitment, scientific data from many NCI-funded studies overseen by NCI’s Epidemiology and Genomics Research Program (EGRP) have been shared in NIH repositories. The datasets listed below are all available in the database of Genotypes and Phenotypes (dbGaP).
- In addition to participating in genetic and genomic studies that are required by NIH to share their data, NCI-funded cohorts have shared complementary and tangential data in dbGaP, often with extensive non-genomic data collected by the cohort.
- The Center for Inherited Disease Research (CIDR) program is funded by NIH to conduct high-quality data generation for approved grantees. Among its services, CIDR works with NCI-funded investigators (including many with grants managed in EGRP) to make their CIDR-generated data available to the broader scientific community.
- The Index of NCI studies lists additional dbGaP datasets from grants funded by NCI and managed by the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS).
All these datasets can be requested through the dbGaP Authorized Access system. Approximately 130 of the studies in dbGaP are from EGRP’s grants portfolio.
NCI leads two funding opportunities that promote the use of the datasets referenced above:
- Secondary Analysis and Integration of Existing Data to Elucidate Cancer Risk and Related Outcomes
- PAR-25-095 (R01, Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
- PAR-25-096 (R21, Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
Applicants to these funding opportunities are encouraged to leverage existing data and perform innovative analyses of the existing data. Applications may include new aims that are being addressed with existing data, new or advanced methods of analyses, or novel combinations and integration of datasets that allow the exploration of important scientific questions. These PARs expire on September 8, 2026. The EGRP contact for these PARs is Melissa Rotunno, PhD.
More information on data freely available to researchers for cancer-related population science studies can be found in the Cancer Epidemiology Descriptive Cohort Database, EGRP’s list of biospecimen resources, and a public datasets and analyses web page hosted by DCCPS.
