30 Years of Cancer Survivorship Research
There were an estimated 18.6 million cancer survivors in 2025, and this number is projected to reach 26 million by 2040. Since 1996, the National Cancer Institute's Office of Cancer Survivorship (OCS) has worked to advance research and care that addresses the physical, psychological, social, and economic effects of cancer and its treatment. Housed within NCI's Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS), OCS continues to support research, resources, and collaborations that improve the quality and length of survival for people living with and beyond cancer.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of OCS, a major milestone that reflects three decades of progress in survivorship science and deeper understanding of the long-term and late effects of cancer and its treatment.

NCI encourages investigators to explore the OCS website to view survivorship resources, research tools, survivorship statistics, and information developed to support the many survivors, caregivers, and advocates who are engaged in and dedicated to the continued advancement of survivorship care and science.
Complementing the work of OCS, the Clinical and Translational Epidemiology Branch (CTEB) within DCCPS' Epidemiology and Genomics Research Program stimulates, promotes, and supports cancer epidemiologic research to identify clinical, genomic, and lifestyle factors that improve outcomes for cancer survivors. Notably, CTEB manages the vast majority of NCI-funded, large cancer epidemiology survivor cohort studies, defined as cancer epidemiology survivor cohorts that follow at least 1,000 cancer survivors over time and collect data, with at least one in-person visit, either at baseline or follow-up, on survivorship outcomes. These cohorts were the focus of an article published by CTEB staff in the journal Cancer, Epidemiology, Biomarkers, & Prevention in 2025.
Today, more than 20 large cancer epidemiology survivor cohorts are actively funded by NCI and managed by CTEB. These include ColoCare, the St. Jude Lifetime Cohort, Detroit Research on Cancer Survivors (ROCS), and the Lymphoma Epidemiology of Outcomes (LEO) cohort. More details about these and other NCI-supported cohorts are available on EGRP's webpage on cancer epidemiology cohorts.
Investigators interested in establishing or expanding cohort research may also wish to explore PAR-27-073, Research Opportunities in Cancer Epidemiology Cohort Studies. PAR-27-073 is an open funding opportunity announcement that encourages applications to support research in cancer epidemiology cohort studies that address specific knowledge gaps in cancer etiology and survivorship.
In addition to the large cancer epidemiology survivor cohort studies, CTEB's areas of interest related to survivorship include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Understanding the survivorship needs of people living with advanced and metastatic cancer;
- The effects of newer cancer treatments or treatment regimens (e.g., immunotherapies or targeted therapies) on cancer-related outcomes;
- The use and effects of emerging exposures and lifestyle factors, including cannabis, on cancer-related outcomes; and
- Approaches to enhance cancer genetic counseling and testing for cancer survivors and those at risk.
Investigators are invited to contact CTEB program directors with questions.
